Fort Lewis was a US Army base from 1917 to 2010 and was located nine miles south-southwest of Tacoma, Washington. Fort Lewis merged with McChord Air Force Base on February 1, 2010 to form Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Fort Lewis, named for Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, was one of the largest and most modern military reserves in the United States. Comprised of 87,000 acres (350 km2) of prairie carved out of the glacier-flattened Nisqually Plain, it is the largest military installation in the Northwest and the Army's most coveted deployment site. Joint Base Lewis-McChord is a major military base, home to much of the 2nd Infantry Division and home to the 7th Infantry Division. 593rd Expeditionary Logistics Command; and 1st Special Forces Group. However, 7th Infantry Division Headquarters is primarily a garrison management body. Fort Lewis' geographic location allows for quick access to the deep water ports of Tacoma, Olympia and Seattle for equipment deployment. Units can be deployed from McChord Field, individuals and small groups can also use nearby Sea-Tac airfield. The base's strategic location provides Air Force units with the ability to conduct combat operations and humanitarian airlifts with the C-17 Globemaster III.
